May Cultural Exposure Trips
During May, our students experienced two cultural exposure trips.
Studio W.I.P
The students had their final session with Art Encounter, where they dove into the expressive and bold world of spray paint art through a hands-on workshop with Studio W.I.P. in Chicago. Spray painting has long been used as a powerful form of self-expression, especially in urban communities. From graffiti and street art to large-scale public murals, spray paint allows artists to tell their stories, make statements, and leave a lasting visual impact on their environments. During the session, students learned the history and cultural significance of spray paint art. Explored how street art has been used as a voice for social justice, identity, and community pride. Practiced techniques used by professional street artists, including stenciling, layering, and color blending. They had the opportunity to create their own individual spray-painted artworks on-site.
After their art session, the students went to Primo Chukis for lunch. Primo Chukis is a bold and vibrant uptown restaurant that blends suburban flavor with authentic Latin roots.

Chicago History Museum
The Chicago History Museum explores the city’s rich and complex past through engaging exhibits and programs. One powerful exhibition, Injustice: The Trial for the Murder of Emmett Till, examines the 1955 killing of 14-year-old Emmett Till and the historic trial that followed. Featuring photographs, courtroom sketches, and personal stories, the exhibit highlights how Till’s death became a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement and continues to resonate today. This impactful experience allows students to engage with a pivotal moment in American history while reflecting on issues of racial injustice, inequality, and the strength of community response.
After exploring the Chicago History Museum, the students had lunch at Portillo’s, which serves up Chicago-style favorites!
